The most valuable lesson to learn when it comes to putting is to know what is happening to the ball as it leaves the putter face. To develop your touch and become a truly great putter the impact conditions need to be as consistent as possible. Correct impact will give the ball initial forward rotation with as little bounce, skid or sidespin as possible, this in turn enables the ball to roll end over end and achieve what we call ‘true roll’.

We are all aware of how the golf ball is spinning in our long games as it is clear to see the ball slice or hook off at an angle, but when it comes to putting it is not so obvious what is happening as we just cannot see it. Just imagine if you discovered that when you strike your putt the ball jumps in the air off the putter face with back and side spin, bounces and then skids before it finally sorts itself out and starts rolling. What is the likelihood of that ball rolling along the line you originally intended? It seems crazy that more is not done in an effort to get the ball rolling correctly on our intended line!
